MIRS may drop WiMAX plans, may consider MVNO operation (Israel)

Israeli integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) operator MIRS is reconsidering its plans to roll out a WiMAX network in the country. MIRS is understood to have become frustrated with repeated delays by Israel’s Ministry of Communications (MoC) to draft WiMAX regulations. As an alternative the operator is believed to be mulling new operations as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). MIRS received approval from the MoC for two trial WiMAX networks in Tel Aviv and Askelon in July 2008. However, the regulator has still not finalised dates for a full WiMAX tender, despite having originally announced its intention to licence frequencies back in February 2007.
