Croatian cellco VIPnet, a subsidiary of Telekom Austria, has begun a test phase of Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) mobile TV broadcasting services, offering free access to Eurosport, NovaTV, CNN and the Croatian Music Channel for handset users in the centre of Zagreb as well as in the eastern part of the city and in the Novi Zagreb area. DVB-H services will add to VIPnet’s existing range of TV-on-demand (video- on-demand) and live streaming.
VIPnet has also successfully tested HSPA+ mobile technology, and has reached a top speed of 21Mbps for data downloads from the internet, in cooperation with Croatia-based equipment provider Ericsson Nikola Tesla. Commercial HSPA+ could be switched on in major cities from as early as spring this year, according to the operator’s press release. Manufacturers are expected to begin delivering commercial HSPA+ devices in the second quarter. VIPnet also announced that it has begun to roll out ‘HSUPA 5.7’ technology, which enables maximum data upload speeds around four times higher than the existing peak upstream transfer rate. The operator’s HSDPA/HSUPA network currently has a peak performance of 7.2Mbps/1.4Mbps (download/upload).
