Globacom subsidiary Glo Gateway has announced a 70% reduction in calls to the UK, the US and Canada. Ibrahim Fadipe, Head of Glo Gateway, announced in a statement that the new call tariff is being offered for its ‘Glo International Talk Extravaganza’ promotion and will expire at the end of January. The offer, which Fadipe claims to be the most competitive in the industry, is open to new and existing customers on both the pre-paid and post-paid platforms. ‘Because of the direct interconnectivity which we have established with many international carriers, we will be able to hub several million minutes of international traffic monthly to different destinations across the globe,’ Fadipe stated. Globacom is currently building a 8,300km long submarine cable to link Europe and the Africa sub-region, to carry data and internet traffic between Nigeria and the rest of the world.
In a separate story, the Federal Government has ordered the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to compile statistics of dropped call rates by incumbent mobile operators, in an attempt to improve the country’s wireless services. The Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili stated the government was aware that subscribers were unhappy with poor services and is taking active steps to improve the situation. Nigeria has one of the world’s highest tariffs for mobile calls, coupled with poor interconnectivity and high network congestion.
